The network's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Significant Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
Last October, the late-night programming block welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the channel unveiled a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. At a time often defined by cynicism, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Network Praise
Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and championed its peculiarly charming sensibility.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about following this lovable family go about their everyday routines.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to help comedy break out of its current layer of irony. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Future Seasons
Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially be part of that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to enjoy the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
