Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has secured a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on January 18 in the city of Melbourne.

A Landmark Comeback to the Australian Courts

Tournament officials announced on Friday that the forty-five-year-old icon will grace the courts again at Melbourne Park a staggering 28 years after her debut. During 1998, she defeated her younger sister Serena in the early stage before exiting in the last eight to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Australian Summer

Venus had previously revealed in the month of November her plans to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she was likewise awarded a wild card, a fortnight prior to the Australian Open. Organizers added that Williams is scheduled to participate in Australia's Hobart International a week later, immediately prior to the action begins at the main venue.

Her last appearance in the city was in 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the women’s singles on two occasions, falling short against Serena in the finals of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I am thrilled to return in the country and looking forward to competing during the summer season," Williams said. "I’ve had so many incredible memories there, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to go back to a place that has been so significant to my professional journey."

Williams' overall record at Melbourne Park stands at an impressive 54 wins and 21 defeats. This year will represent the 22nd time she has appeared in the primary tournament field.

Setting a New Record

The tournament indicated that Williams is poised to be the most senior female player to take part in an Australian Open singles competition, surpassing the mark previously held by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she was defeated in the opening round at the venue in 2015.
