The Legendary Anime Concludes a 27-Year Tradition in 2026

It's the end of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with the production studio announcing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has been airing for more than 25 years and included dozens of filler arcs. Commencing in January, once the Egghead Island arc concludes, the anime will take a three-month break until spring, when the next major arc kicks off.

Updated Production Plan

From now on, One Piece will release two seasons every annually for a maximum of 26 episodes. The studio states this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — including more content, tempo, and timing of the original manga.” However, producers end by promising “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which means more One Piece content, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The One Piece anime had a six-month break that started in October 2024 and ended in early 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to enhance the visuals and let the comic to build a lead to avoid a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The anime greatly benefited from this respite, and it has been able to deliver fans with countless action sequences, superior graphics, and less filler than previously.

Adopting Modern Trends

Although some recap episodes sprouted up during this season, the positive effects of this updated approach far surpass the occasional interruption in the action. This also gives the original work, which is currently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the anime. Per the announcement, this may result in one episode of the series covering one chapter, with some instead covering one and a half chapters or additional to make up for scheduling.

This concludes of an era for anime, as the epic saga is the last big series to ditch the traditional method of creation, which prioritized airing for most of the calendar. This explains why classics such as Bleach, and naturally One Piece have so many side stories, and the standard of the animation can change drastically between installments and the next. Nowadays, series creation is organized in cours, with one or two maximum releasing each year, enabling improved visuals and greater accuracy to the original work.
