The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Famed for Designing for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer who crafted many legendary styles associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.
He was celebrated for his defined forms and performative fashion, most notably the pastel suits that appeared in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
His passing follows less than a month after he unveiled his newest line in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by the late Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with outfits on model Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to merge tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in shaping form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he started creating pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including a number of outfits for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
After a career spanning half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
