The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... At the Moment.

Vince Gilligan never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would become a massive hit. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “I did not foresee the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

As the debut season of the acclaimed series wrapping up—and the next chapter officially in the works—the writers' room reflected on the viewer reception and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.

About the Incredible Viewer Reception

It would be easy to get sidetracked by the widespread acclaim and fan theories about Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to steer clear of all that.

“It feels like force fed hot fudge sundaes and being in a state of bliss,” he describes. “It's amazing, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's by design. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s no way to avoid the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The most practical strategy is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.

“We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not changed by audience chatter.”

“We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.

A Pressing Query: Does the showrunner Know the Ending of Pluribus?

Considering the writers aren't taking cues by audience theories, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… sort of.

“We've developed some interesting ideas about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “yet we stand ready to abandon a decent plan for a better idea. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I suspect we'll be doing that.”

Then again, if all else fails, executive producer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to serve as a last resort.

“I constantly suggest that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and we're in there,” Smith jokes, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”

Alternatively, why not reference the iconic TV endings?

“I'd love for Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.

Pluribus can be watched on the streaming service.
