Preparations for Trump-Putin Talks Postponed Days After Budapest Negotiations Suggested

Currently exist "no preparations" for American leader Donald Trump to confer with Russian President Putin "in the immediate future", a administration representative has declared.

Last Thursday Trump said he and the Kremlin leader would conduct negotiations in Hungary's capital in the coming fortnight to examine the Ukraine conflict.

A preparatory meeting between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was planned for this week - but the White House said the two had had a "positive" conversation and that a meeting was not "necessary".

The administration withheld additional specifics on why the talks had been postponed.

Background Context

The US president had raised the possibility of a Hungarian meeting during a call with the Russian leader, a just prior to meeting Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House.

Certain accounts suggested his meeting with Zelensky had been a "shouting match", with sources suggesting the president had pressured him to cede significant territories of eastern Ukraine as part of a deal with Russia.

Yet, on this week the American president endorsed a ceasefire proposal backed by Kyiv and EU officials to pause the conflict on the present positions.

"Leave it as is where it stands," he stated.

Moscow has repeatedly pushed back against halting the present battle positions.

The Russian government was solely focused on "long-term, sustainable peace", Russia's foreign minister commented on Tuesday, implying that pausing conflict would merely represent a temporary ceasefire.

Negotiating Stances

The "underlying reasons" of the hostilities demanded attention, the Russian diplomat stated, using Kremlin shorthand for a series of extensive requirements that encompass the acknowledgment of complete Moscow control over the Donbas as well as the military reduction of the country – a unacceptable proposition for Kyiv and its EU supporters.

Zelensky said conversations concerning the current lines were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Moscow was "employing all tactics" to prevent dialogue.

He also said the exclusive issue that could make Moscow "become engaged" was that of the provision of long-range weapons to Ukraine.

Military Considerations

Putin's spontaneous discussion with the US leader last Thursday occurred before speculation that the US was preparing to send long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukrainian forces that could possibly hit Russian territory.

Zelensky stated it was the missile discussion that had compelled Moscow to engage in discussion. The talk about the weapons systems had emerged as a "valuable contribution" in negotiations", he remarked.
