An defense official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently examining the possible security risks associated with Chinese cars, and staff have been instructed to refrain from discussing secret information in any vehicles.
Safety Guidance for Defence Staff
During a recently aired appearance on a radio station, Luke Pollard addressed reports that MoD staff have been instructed not to talk about secret information while travelling in Chinese vehicles.
He explained that the ministry is “looking into” cars from China within its fleets, but noted that safety is a issue in all modern cars.
We have a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles account for a very small number.
But whether you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our people is not to plug MoD technology into their car, not to have discussions at a classified classification in any kind of vehicle, because of the growing risks of surveillance that exist in all vehicle, to restrict those secret conversations in protected areas. This is a wise and sensible thing for anyone worried about security.
After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: That is precisely what we are looking into at the moment.”
Broader Security Background
This revelation comes as reports from Norway and Denmark have warned the UK to the presence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese electric buses, which could enable the Chinese government to switch off public transport and bring chaos to public transit.
Additionally, a Russian intelligence vessel has been directing lasers at RAF pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.
The broader security environment underscores the significance of strong protocols and vigilance in all areas of official activities, from vehicle use to discussions practices.
