Information Available Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Terror Attack

At least 16 lives were killed and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when assailants shot at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident local police have labeled a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities stands at 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to the hospital.

The victims have not yet been officially identified, but investigators think their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the victims who have been identified at this time.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister expressed that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, many remain under care, with a number in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Described as a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
