I thought I edged it - Carey on overturned decision.

Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey admitted he felt he had nicked the ball when he was overturned on DRS during day one of the third Ashes Test against England.

After surviving on 72, Carey proceeded to score a excellent 106 to guide the home side post 326-8 at the close in Adelaide.

The Incident

The home side were 245 for 6 when Carey looked to play a cut to seamer Josh Tongue.

The England team appealed confidently, believing they had detected an edge, but umpire Ahsan Raza gave it not out.

Following captain Ben Stokes referred the on-field call, the replay examined by TV umpire Chris Gaffaney showed a spike but this came prior to the ball had made contact with the bat.

Gaffaney also said he was of the opinion there was a space between the bat and the ball.

Therefore, Carey was reprieved.

"I thought there was a feather or some sort of noise when it passed the bat," commented Carey.

"Had I been given out, I likely would have reviewed, but without much conviction. It was a nice sound as it passed the bat."

Technology Debate

There has been debate about 'Snicko'' during the Ashes contest after a series of unclear calls.

Bowling coach David Saker hinted the touring side may escalate this most recent incident to a higher level with the match official Jeff Crowe.

"I don't think we've done anything about it so far but after today, maybe that might go a bit further," Saker said.

"We've had doubts about it throughout. We shouldn't be talking about this after a day's play, it should just be better than that. It is what it is."

Emotional Century

Carey's century was his maiden in Test cricket against England.

It was also an emotional moment for Carey, whose father died in September. His spouse was crying in the crowd as the batsman celebrated by pointing to the heavens.

"To make a hundred here in front of home fans and family was special," said Carey.

"I guess you know as well why I was looking to the heavens. It's hard not to get emotional. But, no, it was great."

History of Controversy

Carey is not new to Ashes controversy.

He was the wicketkeeper who notoriously dismissed Jonny Bairstow at Lord's in the 2023 series, resulting in a heated final day.

Regarding the overturned decision he continued: "Snicko obviously didn't line up. That's cricket - you get the rub of the green sometimes."

"I might have gotten away with one."
