In a notable move for their overhauling roster, the South Side team have welcomed Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, completing a $34 million contract bringing in the high-profile player.

Deal Structure and Player Perks

The deal grants a substantial signing bonus, payable within 30 days, combined with annual pay of $16 million for the 2026 season and seventeen million for the 2027 year.

Importantly, Murakami's compensation can increase based on accolade achievements in 2026:

• $1 million for earning the Most Valuable Player award.
• $500,000 for finishing in the top three in MVP voting.
• $250,000 for placing in the top ten.
• $250,000 for being named the ROY honor.

The agreement includes that he cannot be sent to the farm system without his permission and grants him a unrestricted player at the termination of the deal. Extra provisions include a dedicated interpreter and airfare between Japan and the U.S..

Posting Fee and Franchise History

As part of the transaction, Chicago must pay a posting fee of roughly $6.58 million to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's professional league. The Japanese club would also receive a supplemental fee of fifteen percent triggered salary escalators.

Murakami will become the fourth Japanese to play for the White Sox, in the footsteps of reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu once managed Murakami back in Japan.

Player Profile

Murakami, a lefty bat who will turn 26 soon, enters a young group of offensive players in Chicago that contains prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are finished with a last-place season, placing at the bottom in the division but showing a notable improvement from the year before campaign.

A two-time Most Valuable Player honors in '21 and '22, Murakami is famous for a monumental 2022 season where he hit 56 HRs, breaking the all-time record for a Japanese-born player formerly held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the youngest player ever to secure Japan's elusive Triple Crown.

His most recent NPB campaign was curtailed to a partial schedule due to an side strain. Even with striking out 64 times, he still managed .273 with 22 home runs and 47 driven in.

Over his eight-year tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has compiled a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 home runs, 647 runs batted in, and 977 Ks in 892 contests. Initially playing mostly at first base, he has spent most of his time to third.

WBC Heroics

Murakami's big-game performance were on center stage during the 2023 World Baseball Classic. In the semifinal against Mexico, he delivered a game-ending two-base hit that brought home two fellow Japanese stars for a come-from-behind 6-5 victory. The next night in the final against the USA, he blasted a game-tying homer in the early innings, helping Japan's subsequent title triumph.

The power hitter is slated to be officially presented at a media availability on the coming Monday.
